New Windows into our Universe
Professor Amanda Weltman
South African Research Chair in Physical Cosmology, High Energy Physics, Cosmology, and Astrophysics Theory (HEPCAT) group, Department of Mathematics and Applied Mathematics, University of Cape Town, South Africa.
In this talk we will take a tour of exciting international results using novel astrophysical tools to observe our universe.
The Shape of Things to Come – the Rise of Machines in Natural Sciences
Professor Jeff Murugan
Professor of Mathematical Physics,
The Laboratory for Quantum Gravity and Strings (QGASLab)
Department of Mathematics and Applied Mathematics,
University of Cape Town, South Africa
In this talk, I will describe in broad brush strokes the massive impact that artificial intelligence–specifically so-called deep-learning algorithms–is having on the way we are doing science and, more generally, how we understand the universe around us. If time permits, I will illustrate these statements with some specific examples that I have been involved in, in the fields of condensed matter physics as well as in astrophysics.
